Since September of last year I have been facilitating sexual education workshops along with Mercedes, a representative of FSM, and Samuel of the Peace Corp. We work in six schools located in the two municipalities of Meanguera and Jocoaitique, both located within Comunidad Segundo Montes.
We launched the first of the series in September of 2012; the topic was ‘Sexuality, Anatomy, and the Sexual Reproductive System.’ We picked up the following month of October facilitating a workshop on ‘HIV and AIDs Prevention,’ in which we focused on transmission, prevention, as well as overcoming
discrimination, stigmatization, and stereotypes.
This month of February we began a new topic, ‘Consequences of Teenage Pregnancy and its’ Preventative Measures’ taking in mind that El Salvador is the smallest Central American country, and yet has the highest population density in Latin America.
We dialogued on the following:
-Consequences of overpopulation and high birth rate
-Teenage birth and its serious consequences of economic responsibility, psychological stress, physical insecurity, familiar disintegration, dropping out of school.
-Questions to consider when choosing a method of birth control (efficiency, cost, how easy is it to use?, could it be dangerous?, does it have secondary effects?, does it protect against STDs?.
-Methods of Birth Control
-The Feminine Cycle: Menstruation and Ovulation
