Developing Artistic Expression within the Segundo Montes Pastoral Team: Painting Workshops on Saturdays   1 comment

Painting a Rural Countryside

This past month of January we began a series of paint workshops with a local painter, Erick Vargas, who lives in Gotera, which is the departmental head of Morazán. Don Erick is providing a series of 12 painting classes that are held on consecutive Saturdays beginning at midday and ending at 5pm. There are a total of 20 participants in the workshops, composed of both the Pastoral Team as well as their family members, ranging from the ages of 12 to 32.

Each 5-hour Saturday session consists of two classes and will therefore extend over 6 Saturdays. As of now we have completed 3 Saturdays, which are equivalent to 6 classes. The content so far has been both theoretical as well as practical. We began with the history of painting, how to extract paints colors from natural resources, as well as identifying the primary colors, secondary colors, complimentary colors, how to hold the paint brush, how to clean the paint brush, and mixing colors.

After completing the 12 classes (6 Saturdays), the idea is that the participants have the theoretical as

well as the practical skill and knowledge to be able to mural the front wall of the templo in San Luis. Painting the mural is expected to take an additional 2 months and we hope to count with the collaboration of Don Erick. The entire process of almost 5 months (the 12 classes and the muraling field work) will come to a close with a graduation, a presentation of diplomas, and a presentation of the artwork.
